The first 3 things.
What you do in the next few days matters. Start here.
1. Take your emotions off her plate.
When your wife or girlfriend asks for a break, pain, fear, and frustration are all normal. But trying to work through them with a woman who’s asking for space pushes her further away. And lashing out does lasting damage.
So what do I do with my feelings? Good question. Bottling them up backfires, and so does venting. What works is constructive release.
Are you going to talk with a trusted friend or relative, write in a journal, do a workout, schedule an intake with a therapist, or work with a coach to build a plan?
2. Say less, and say it calmly.
Long texts, pleading, and arguing your case add pressure. And they’re not attractive. One steady message does more.
Try something that hits these 3 points, in your style: 1) Acknowledge the pattern. 2) Give her space. 3) Own your part.
“I know we’ve been stuck in a bad pattern. Take the time you need, and I’ll work on my half.”
What if she responds with something challenging, like: “I don’t want you to do anything, I just need space.”
Yes, this is common, and leads to the bonus insight.
Bonus Insight: Expect Pushback
By the time a woman asks for a break, her batteries are drained. She’s unlikely to be in problem-solving mode with you.
At this stage, many women throw up barriers to anything they perceive as grasping on your part, or requiring work on her part. You should expect these tests. Don’t let them throw you off your center.
Here’s how you respond to the challenging communication above: “Looking at my part of how we got here is something I’m doing for myself.”
3. Make no big moves.
Right now, everything feels urgent. Big moves made in panic are the actions men wind up regretting most.
If you don’t have a plan in place, and you’re not back to your emotional baseline, do not:
- Give ultimatums or set deadlines
- Move out, or ask her to
- Involve the kids, in-laws, or mutual friends
- Post about it, or interact with her in public online
- Make big promises or grand gestures
Rekindle works best if you:
- Believe she’s the right woman for you
- Know your patterns were built by two people
- Want a plan that calms things down so you can work the problem
- Want expert frameworks, not just a script to memorize
- Have feelings, but not always the best way to express them
